Many of you know that, COVID-19 has hit us hard this past year and we needed to adapt eating habits to survive the pandemic. Some things we did, included: making our own food, reducing going out to eat, ordering takeout, and buying food in bulk and even switching up where they buy their food.

Aren’t some people making their own food already? It’s not about if we did or not, it’s about how often we’ve had to prepare meals, and how many more people began to use their kitchen since the lockdown. For example, in my house, we already cook homemade food like pasta and fish, but ever since the beginning of the pandemic, my mom has been learning how to make bread, pasta, pizza, desserts etc. I also reached out to friends during the pandemic, they have also received the same response.

Before COVID-19, the average teenager would go out to eat junk food on a daily basis. Now that we have all been restricted to going out like before, most people order their food or get international treats from Amazon, giving them a chance to eat something different without leaving their home. They are also spending less money and hanging out at home with the quarantine happening. Despite all of that, people have been starting to garden and tending to vegetables.

Before the pandemic if you were to ask someone if they garden, you would be met with a silent stare. Not all teenagers are going out to garden our produce, but the ones that do are depending on themselves to garden each day and pick the fresh food to cook with.

Finally, people have been buying in bulk. Even though everyone buys in bulk, the amounts have been much bigger and there was even a shortage of cleaning products and toilet paper for half a year! Ever since the pandemic was announced before the March break, my family has been going to Costco a lot more to practice their cooking skills.

Overall I think the pandemic has impacted people’s eating choices for the better and has taught them how to become healthier. It has impacted the way people choose their food and what they can do to save money in such a difficult time.
