It is safe to say chocolate has its own nostalgia. Everyone has tried chocolate once in their lives, from childhood snacks to the everyday tempting displays on a check-out counter. This is likely your everyday mass-produced chocolate from companies. But have you ever heard of a Chocolatier? The Architects of Chocolate?

Also known as a chocolate confections maker, a chocolatier is someone who turns pre-made basic chocolate into something entirely new and artistic. They are well described as chocolate architects, since they don’t make their base chocolate from raw cacao beans. Instead, they buy pre-made chocolate as their raw building material.

The Blueprint Behind Their Creations

So what does a chocolatier actually do if they don’t make the chocolate from scratch?

In summary, their work consists of making something new and putting it together. Their process of work includes many components like blending new flavours and designing moulds for their desired creations.

Their work also consists of more complicated and challenging processes like tempering chocolate, sculpting it into unique designs and shapes, or storing chocolate at the right temperature. Alongside this list of complex processes, they also have to adhere to all the food regulations and safety requirements.

What Kind of Things Do They Create?

Since a chocolatier is someone who makes their own unique creations from chocolate, everyone’s work differs.

Some common things you can buy from a chocolatier are truffles, fudge, chocolate bark, bonbons, chocolate-covered fruits or nuts, and even pastries.

Their work can be both plain and gourmet; some might make simple treats, and others might create baffling sculptures. But every chocolatier is unique in their own art.

Where Can They Be Found?

Perhaps after learning more about these architects of chocolates, you might be wondering where they can be found?

In short, chocolatiers can be found in diverse settings that cater to their specialty and work. Hence, here is a brief description of the diverse types of chocolate architects

Artisan Chocolatiers create their works in boutiques or their own shops; these people tend to make chocolates using special methods instead of commercial modern appliances. Their works also tend to be more expensive due to their carefully hand-crafted, time-consuming work.

Commercial Chocolatiers operate in larger manufacturing facilities that are equipped with industrial-level machinery to help their work, which tends to make their products cheaper.

Patissier-Chocolatier are pastry chefs that integrate specialized chocolate designing methods into their works

Special Chocolatiers focus on a niche diet, such as making vegan chocolate.

Summary

Through this summary of chocolatiers, we can conclude that chocolate makers don’t make chocolate from scratch, but rather use pre-made chocolate to sculpt into something unique and new.

There are many different kinds of chocolatiers, and even pastry chefs that incorporate chocolate art into their own creations.

Hence, looking at this definition of what makes a chocolatier, it is right to call them a true architect of chocolate.
