Don’t you want to dig into how young people are driving innovation in agriculture and food production, which contribute to more sustainable and resilient food systems?

Staff note: Skyler Yoo was one of our extraordinary Market Leaders this season running the Youth Food Market, a seasonal project in Waterloo Region that aims to support youth skill building and leadership, as well as local food systems and food accessibility. The Markets are now finished for 2024, but will return next year so stay tuned!

In a buzzing corner of the city, a gastronomic revolution is quietly emerging. The Youth Food Market, an energetic new venture, is changing how young people interact with food. In your mind, if the thought of “here she goes about young people just selling fresh produce and artisanal products” pops up, you are incredibly mistaken. You only know half of the story. So stick around to expand your knowledge and discover the amazing program that is YFM. This innovative market not only provides local vegetables from local farms and schools’ gardens contributed by youth around Kitchener and Waterloo, but also serves as a hub for education, community, and empowerment. Don’t you want to come with me to explore the whole new world at Youth In Food System Markets?

The one thing that I need to inform you before this starts is that I feel that everyone who is volunteering for this market seems confident in everything they’re doing! In the point of view as a market leader, me and my peers had stepped out of the comfort zone to encourage ourselves and seek an opportunity about local eating habitsas, as well as expanding our interests in helping out the community. In 2023 summer, the markets happened throught out at Eastwood Collegiate Institute, and Chandler Mowat Community Centre. Youth Food Market is led by the amazing collective of youth hosting accessible vegetable kiosks, happening each year. This initiative aims to strengthen local food systems and increase food accessibility while also providing youngsters with chances for skill development and leadership. It is the best place to gain more exposure to the food crisis in the local community with wonderful people. Among the amazing volunteers, Chole had informed that Youth Food Market had allowed her to learn more about ways she can implement sustainable solutions in her community.

The other thing that makes our market stand out is that we have a special way of making the products accessible for everyone in our community. I bet you would be crying and regretting your past decision because guess what? I’m so ready to attack you with the shocking benefits of our market, and why you should give your immediate attention towards our market.  But before I start making your regrets come flooding back, let me ask you a question! Imagine it’s a sunny Sunday that you flinch your eyes due to the strong sun, while also making the smile spread on your face. And you heard there’s a dynamic domestic market happening in your town, which didn’t really spark the excitement since you thought it’s just a boring market. Later that evening, as you scroll through social media, and see photos, and realize the market was led by Youth leaders who care about positively contributing to their community and who are running towards the common goal. Youth in Food Market also allows customers to  decide how much they can afford/pay for each item within the price range, which you had never seen in any other market before. The regret sets in as you realize that this was an opportunity to experience something unique, support local businesses, and spend a day in the community.

So now is your chance to visit our shocking Youth In Food Market!*
