Local food supports farmers, strengthens the economy, and reduces transport. You do not need major lifestyle changes. Daily choices make a clear impact. In Ontario, access to local food is strong, so you can act on this easily.

How to Buy Smart

Start with where and how you shop. This has the biggest impact.

  • Choose farmers’ markets and small grocers. Ontario contains many farmers markets filled with goodies
  • Read labels. Pick “Product of Canada” to ensure the food was grown here.
  • Support restaurants that source locally. To help engage in this practice, ask staff about suppliers.

Reduce Waste and Grow Your Own

Reducing food waste supports local systems by lowering unnecessary demand. Plan meals, store food properly, and use leftovers. Growing small items at home, like herbs, supports local production. Preserving food, such as freezing fruits or making sauces, helps you rely less on imports when items are out of season.

Supporting local food is not about being perfect. It is about making better choices when you can. Picking local options, using what you buy, and being more aware of where your food comes from all make a difference. These habits become routine over time. As more people do this, local farmers get more support and communities become more connected to their food. It is a simple shift, but it adds up.
