Our AGM and 30th anniversary celebrations are just a week away! We do hope those of you on the island, as well as those of you in colder provinces who want to enjoy the fall in pretty Victoria, BC, will be able to join us. The day will include AGM business, a chance to meet members of the board and staff, as well as workshops, talks, a delicious lunch and, of course, a seed swap. We are hoping to have all registrations in hand by the 21st of October, to help our caterers prepare lunch, so please register soon!
November begins with the Eastern Canadian Organic Seed Growers Network's 2014 conference in Montreal, Quebec. The conference will be fully bilingual and will be an incredible gathering place for gardeners, seed savers, seed companies, farmers and seed production experts. Find out more and register today!
Also, don't miss the Bauta Family Initiative's latest call for proposals. Details are below.
Happy and abundant harvest season!
The rarest seeds are often those that you, a backyard (or aspiring) gardener got from your grandma, who brought them over from the old country many years ago and has only shared them with you. After years of being grown out, harvested and replanted, these seeds have become especially adapted to the growing conditions in your area. These are the seeds that are incredibly important to save, and we want to encourage you to do just that.
The man on the phone seems embarrassed. "No ma'am,” he says. “I'm sorry, we cut the two “Fameuse” variety apple trees we had left last year. We started running out of space, you see, and we had to expand our regular varieties. The demand was not very high for these apples, and the trees were old. Sorry!”
The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security is now accepting applications for the Seed Facilitation Fund. The goal of the fund is to provide financial support to producers and organizations seeking to support the production of ecologically-grown vegetable seed and field crop seed.
Applications Due: November 17th, 2014
For our 30th year, we've launched a newly designed web site and we want to feature you, our members!
Celebrate thirty years of seed saving with us, by showing your support to Seeds of Diversity. Send us a good-quality photo of yourself, in your garden, at a Seedy Saturday, holding your favourite flower or vegetable. Include a few words about your commitment to seed diversity, and we'll add you to our web site.
Every time someone looks at our home page a random photo of one of our members will appear, showing the people who care about Seeds of Diversity, and the reasons they support seed saving. Make that message more compelling, by adding your face too!
Send your photos to webmaster@seeds.ca
