Whether it is grabbing a burger after school, buying strawberries in the middle of winter or choosing a reusable water bottle instead of a plastic one, our decisions have a much bigger impact than we might realize. As climate change continues to affect communities around the world, many people are asking an important question: Can our food choice actually help fight climate change? The answer is yes. While one person’s actions alone will not solve the climate crisis, millions of people embracing a sustainable food lifestyle can make a real difference.

The food system includes everything from growing crops and raising livestock to transporting, processing, packaging, selling, and eating food. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food systems are responsible for around one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions come from activities such as clearing forests for farmland, using fertilizers, transporting food long distances and producing methane from livestock like cattle.

One of the major ways food contributes to climate change is through the production of meat, especially beef. Cows release methane, a greenhouse gas that is much more powerful than carbon dioxide over a short period of time. Producing beef also requires large expanses of land and water compared to growing crops such as beans, lentils or vegetables. This does not mean that everyone has to become vegetarian, but reducing meat consumption, even by having one or two meat-free meals each week, can help lower environmental impacts.

Another important issue is food waste. Every year, about one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted. When food ends up in landfills, it breaks down and releases methane into the atmosphere. Simultaneously, valuable resources such as water, energy and labour used to produce that food are wasted as well. Young people can make a difference by planning meals, storing food properly, eating leftovers and only buying what they need.

Buying local and seasonal foods is yet another way to reduce emissions. Foods grown locally often travel shorter distances before reaching grocery stores or farmers’ markets, reducing transportation-related pollution. Seasonal fruits and vegetables usually require fewer resources to grow because they are produced under natural conditions rather than in heated greenhouses or imported from other countries. Supporting local farmers also strengthens local economies and creates a more resilient food system.

Plant-based foods also play an important role in building sustainable food systems. Foods such as beans, peas, lentils, oats, fruits and vegetables generally have a smaller carbon footprint than many animal products. Choosing plant-based meals more often does not mean giving up favourite foods forever. Instead, it is about finding a healthy balance that benefits both people and the planet.

Young people have a unique opportunity to influence change. Many students are already leading school gardens, organizing food drives, reducing cafeteria waste and educating others about sustainable eating. Social media has provided youth a powerful platform to spread awareness and encourage environmentally friendly habits. By asking questions about the origins of food production and making informed choices, young people can inspire families, schools and communities to take action.

However, it is also important to recognize that not everyone has the same access to sustainable food. Fresh fruits, vegetables and locally produced foods can be more expensive or unavailable in some communities. Governments, businesses and communities are responsible for making sustainable food affordable and accessible for everyone. Fighting climate change requires larger changes in food policies and agricultural practices.

In conclusion, our food choices are more powerful than they may seem. Choosing to waste less food, eating more plant-based meals, supporting local farmers and learning about sustainable food systems are all steps that contribute to a healthier planet. Climate change is a global challenge, but it is also an opportunity for young people to become leaders in creating positive change. Every meal is a chance to make a difference. Together, our everyday choices can help build a more sustainable future, both for ourselves and for generations to come.

References:

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
