It\u2019s food. It\u2019s regulated. But what if I told you that some of the most common items in your kitchen might not be what they claim to be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is called <\/span><b>food fraud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s not just a mistake; it\u2019s when companies purposefully mess with food to make more money. It&#8217;s a massive global problem that happens way more often than people realize.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>The Different Kinds of Food Fraud<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">The industry term for this problem is Economically Motivated Adulteration (EMA). This refers to any situation where a product is altered to lower costs while the selling price remains high. There are four primary ways this is done:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><b>Adulteration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the practice of adding a cheaper, undeclared ingredient to a product <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-15814 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/llllllll-300x162.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/llllllll-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/llllllll-510x277.png 510w, https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/llllllll.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/>to increase its weight or volume. A well-known example is the addition of cellulose (wood pulp) to grated Parmesan cheese or mixing cheap syrups into honey.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Substitution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This occurs when a high-value ingredient is replaced by a cheaper alternative. This is extremely common in the seafood industry, where expensive fish like Red Snapper or White Tuna are swapped for lower-grade fish like Tilapia or Escolar.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Dilution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This method is used for liquids. Premium products like Extra Virgin Olive Oil are often thinned out with cheap seed oils, such as sunflower or soybean oil, to create more volume for less money.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Mislabelling:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is the most direct form of fraud. It involves lying about where the food came from or how it was produced. This includes labeling farmed fish as &#8220;wild-caught&#8221; or calling conventional produce &#8220;organic&#8221; just to charge a higher price.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Real-Life Examples of Food Fraud<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Olive oil is one of the most commonly faked products. Many bottles labeled as \u201cExtra Virgin Olive Oil\u201d are mixed with cheaper oils like vegetable or sunflower oil. So even though you\u2019re paying for something premium, you might not actually be getting it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Honey is another big example. A lot of \u201cpure honey\u201d is diluted with sugar syrups to increase<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15816 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lll-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lll-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lll-510x288.png 510w, https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/lll.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/> quantity. It still looks and tastes similar, but it\u2019s not the real thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Coffee can also be affected. Some ground coffee has been found to contain fillers like roasted corn or barley. This lowers the cost for producers but tricks consumers into thinking they\u2019re getting 100% coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15818 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/unnamed-300x116.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/unnamed-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/unnamed.png 361w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Seafood fraud is also very common. Expensive fish like tuna or salmon are sometimes replaced with cheaper fish. Most people can\u2019t tell the difference, which makes it easy for companies to get away with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Spices are another surprising example. Spices like saffron and turmeric are sometimes mixed with cheaper substances or even artificial colors to make them look more high-quality. Since spices are expensive, this is a common target for fraud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Milk and dairy products have also been involved in fraud cases. In some situations, water has been added to milk to increase volume, and in more serious cases, harmful chemicals have been used to fake higher protein levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>The Dangers of Food Fraud<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Some of the main dangers of food fraud include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Health risks:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered food can contain harmful substances or hidden allergens that aren\u2019t listed on the label. This can be dangerous, especially for people with allergies. In some cases, fake ingredients or chemicals have caused serious illnesses and hospitalizations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Being misled:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumers trust labels when buying food, expecting quality and safety. Food fraud breaks that trust because people think they\u2019re getting high-quality or pure products, but they are actually getting something cheaper or altered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Serious health cases:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food fraud has caused real harm in the past. For example, in the 2008 melamine milk <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15819 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/seeds.ca\/schoolfoodgardens\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/unnamed-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"157\" \/>scandal, melamine (a toxic industrial compound) was added to milk, making thousands of people sick, especially babies. Four months later, an estimated 300,000 babies in China were sick from the contaminated milk, and the kidney damage led to six fatalities. This shows that food fraud is not always harmless\u2014it can be dangerous and even life-threatening.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Hidden allergens and unknown ingredients:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When ingredients are substituted or not listed properly, people may unknowingly consume something they are allergic to. This can lead to severe allergic reactions and medical emergencies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Unfair to honest businesses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies that follow food safety rules can lose money because they can\u2019t compete with cheaper, fake products. If something seems unusual, it might not be genuine.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>Stay informed:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The more people know about food fraud, the harder it becomes for companies to continue these practices.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\"><b>What\u2019s Really on Your Plate<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">Food fraud is something most people don\u2019t think about, but it\u2019s more common than we realize. From olive oil to honey to seafood, many everyday foods can be altered or mislabeled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif;\">This doesn\u2019t mean you should stop trusting everything you buy, but it does mean you should be more aware.
