\"\"T<\/span>he image that comes to mind when people think about food waste is usually scraps of food thrown out when they could have been used. In the end, the reality is much worse than regular household habits. Every single year, 60% of the food produced in Canada is either lost or wasted. It\u2019s a problem that is severely impacting our Earth every minute, but it\u2019s also an issue which can be solved if enough effort is contributed by all people in Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Why is Food in Canada Wasted?<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of wasting food goes much deeper t<\/span>han most imagine. Food is wasted at nearly e<\/span>very step of the way, and some are easily p<\/span>reventable through simple solutions. The f<\/span>irst is on farms, where crops may be left u<\/span>nharvested if they don\u2019t meet standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Food can also be spoiled during transportation a<\/span>nd usually ends up in landfills. Grocery stores g<\/span>et rid of expired products, and this happens m<\/span>ore than usual. Last but not least is at home, w<\/span>here more than $1,300 of food is thrown away e<\/span>very single year in an average Canadian household.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Food Waste is Impacting Us<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Wasted food has environmental, economic, and a s<\/span>ocietal impact on the Earth as a whole. The food w<\/span>hich ends up in landfills produces methane, a v<\/span>ery harmful greenhouse gas which contributes to c<\/span>limate change. Canada also loses around $49 b<\/span>illion dollars annually due to food waste, and w<\/span>hile all this food is going to waste, around 50 m<\/span>illion Canadians struggle to find enough food.<\/span><\/p>\n
