Below, you will find a list of some of the words introduced throughout the Pollinators section of the Youth Portal. These are the words that you may not have come across before, or may have heard but not known exactly what they mean. Refer back to this anytime you need, and let us know if there is a word missing from the list below.<\/p>\n

Agriculture<\/strong>: The science or practice of farming.<\/span><\/p>\n Co-evolution<\/strong>: The influence of closely associated species on each other in their evolution. This is evidence of speciation and adaptation, and is the process that causes the biological diversity\u00a0we see in nature.<\/span><\/p>\n Cross pollination<\/strong>: Pollination (see <\/span>pollination<\/span>) of a flower with pollen (see <\/span>pollen<\/span>) from a different flower.<\/span><\/p>\n Egg<\/strong>: Haploid female gamete (reproductive cell) located within the ovary (see<\/span> ovary<\/span>) of a flowering plant.<\/span><\/p>\n Family<\/strong>:\u00a0One of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks, classified\u00a0between order and genus.<\/span><\/p>\n Fertilization<\/strong>: The process of combining the male gamete (see<\/span> pollen<\/span>) with the female gamete (see<\/span>\u00a0egg<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n Food system<\/strong>: Involves all the processes and infrastructure involved in feeding a population. It takes into account everything that happens to a certain piece of food before it is consumed.<\/span><\/p>\n Nectar<\/strong>: A sugary fluid secreted by plants and consumed by some animals for energy.<\/span><\/p>\n Ovary<\/strong>: Enlarged lower part of the pistil (see <\/span>pistil<\/span>), containing the eggs (see <\/span>egg<\/span>) of the plant. After fertilization (see <\/span>fertilization<\/span>) the ovary will mature into a fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n Perfect flower<\/strong>: A flower in which both male and female reproductive structures (see <\/span>stamen<\/span> and <\/span>pistil<\/span>) are present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Pistil<\/strong>: The female reproductive part of a flower, consisting of the ovary at the base (see <\/span>ovary<\/span>), the middle part, called the style, and the stigma at the tip (see <\/span>stigma<\/span>)<\/span><\/p>\n Pollen<\/strong>:\u00a0Substance consisting of pollen grains, which produce male gametes (reproductive cells) and is consumed by some animals for food.<\/span><\/p>\n Pollination<\/strong>: The act of transferring pollen (see <\/span>pollen<\/span>) from the male part of the flower (see <\/span>stamen<\/span>) to the female part (see <\/span>stigma<\/span>). Pollination can occur by pollinators (see <\/span>pollinators<\/span>), wind, water, or hand.
