Earlier this year, the government decided to begin the process to develop a national food policy that for Canadians. So far, we have had no single set of guidelines to shape the environmental, economic or social aspects of our food system. We hope this policy will change that.
A comprehensive and complete policy should ensure the long-term sustainability of Canada's food system. It should support building and maintaining diversity in our food system, and recognize the central role that seed diversity and security play. It should also support the goals of environmental sustainability – particularly in the face of climate change, social justice and farmer livelihoods, and healthy food for all.
Perhaps most importantly, a meaningful food poolicy will reflect the needs of Canadians. The government is asking for your feedback till August 31st. What would you like to see included in the policy? Have your say now!
The policy is due to be launched in mid-2018. Read more about the National Food Policy process and give your feedback here.
You can also see some background on why we need a National Food Policy, and read about what food groups in Canada are calling on the government to include in the policy at Food Secure Canada's website and USC Canada's website.
