As I write this, it is 14 days - just two weeks - until summer is upon us. And by the time you’re reading this, we’ll be even closer to the solstice.
This time of year marks a slow down of some of our activities here at Seeds of Diversity, now that folks have the seeds they need to grow another year’s garden. This means we finally have a bit of space in our minds to reflect and look back on the last six months. On my mind today…… Seedy Saturdays.
Seedy Saturday and Seedy Sunday events came and went in a whirlwind of excitement. 180 events (at minimum, this is the number promoted on our page) across all 10 provinces saw many, many thousands of people show up for seeds; for connection; for community; for knowledge sharing; for fun. And fun they were! Take a look at a few of the images shared with us:
Screening of In My Backyard for Innisfil (ON) Seedy Saturday
Shuswap Seedy Saturday in Enderby BC
“We had a wonderful event with a great turnout. We had 147 in attendance over the afternoon. Our local Home Hardware store hosted the event in the new expanded area.” Patty, Meadow Lake SK
“Absolutely gorgeous day in Penticton and we had the sunniest location being located at the roll up door [..] it was great to connect with the Okanagan Master Gardeners, Penticton & District Garden Club, Okanagan Seed Savers etc” Lauren, SoD volunteer for Penticton BC
The above photos and recaps are only a small fraction of what took place from coast to coast between November and April. We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their experiences, stories, and pictures with us afterwards, and promise we see and admire each and every one.
During our final Seedy Saturday planning session in January, we asked attendees: “What comes to mind when you hear ‘Seedy Saturday’?” Here’s what they had to say:
As many reading this know, Seedy Saturday and Seedy Sunday events are a collection of individually organized and run seed exchange events put on by groups across the country. They could be libraries, small businesses, nonprofit organizations, garden clubs and horticultural societies, or individual passionate people. Each is a little bit (or a lot) different, with its own unique structure and activities to serve its community.
And none of them are owned or run by Seeds of Diversity, despite the common misconception. We are involved only as supporters, offering resources and connections in the small ways we can.
So, what exactly did we get up to during this busy Seedy event season? Here’s a look at some of the numbers, to tell the story of how we’ve kept busy:
179 events promoted on our events page and across social media
20 new events in 2025
3648 seed packets sent out to 152 events (about 12% being courtesy Northern Wildflowers)
3 virtual planning sessions attended by 88 people
1 film, In My Backyard, used by 43 events
19+ volunteers representing Seeds of Diversity at 26 events (more about our volunteers here!)
39 Seeds of Diversity tables set up by event organizers
Thanks to everyone who took part in Seedy Saturdays and Sundays this year - organizers, volunteers, vendors, attendees. These gatherings matter to us, and we’re delighted to see year after year that they matter to all of you, too.
See you next season - happy growing!
