Back to February 2018 Newsletter
Since our very beginning over 30 years ago, the heart of Seeds of Diversity's membership has been our seed exchange. Back in 1988 members rescued and collected their favourite heritage varieties, saved seeds, and shared them with other members to keep the varieties alive. We listed about a hundred varieties back then.
Today, our members are still rescuing and saving heritage varieties, but they exchange over 2100 varieties of vegetables, grains, fruit, flowers, and herbs!
If you haven't seen our seed exchange, take a look at it online at seeds.ca/seed-directory. Scroll through the categories, and see all the home-saved seeds that our members offer.
When you see a seed variety that you like, click on it to see where it's been grown. Members can see the name and contact information of the grower, and can order the seeds directly from them.
Orders are mostly made on printed forms with payment through the mail, because most of our seed savers are regular gardeners (instead of seed companies) so they don't take payment by credit card (we're working on how to make that easier).
Our members have the largest combined assortment of heritage seeds available in Canada, and they would love to hear from you. Like all gardeners, they grow the plants that they love, and save the seeds from their favourites. That's how you can know which varieties grow well in your area - by growing seeds that were saved nearby - and also which varieties you might like. In a seed savers network every seed comes with a personal testimonial from the seed grower!
An annual membership to Seeds of Diversity gives you access to our seed exchange, seed grow-out programs, and our online news.
Thank you for your support!
