Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples is complex and multi-faceted, so here at Seeds of Diversity, we try to see it through a lens of seed-saving, preservation of traditions, and food for everyone. As an organization of seed savers who care about food plants from every culture and every part of the Earth, it means recognizing that the food we all eat mostly exists because of the seed-saving efforts of countless farmers over a thousand generations. We pay particular gratitude for the food plants that were selected and stewarded from their wild relatives by those generations of Indigenous farmers across Turtle Island.
We recognize that many well-known food seeds, such as "Hubbard" squash, or "Chester" bean, were not introduced by the people or places that they are currently named for, but are actually of ancient and Indigenous origin. And we resolve to help reconcile mis-named seed varieties by consulting with Indigenous seed-keepers and encouraging all growers to use names that reflect their seeds' rightful ancestry.

We're offering 52 varieties of garlic bulbils to diversify your garden and your meals. Bulbils - not the large bulbs that you're probably used to, but the tiny nuggets that grow in the scapes at the tops of the plants, are a very economical way to collect and grow a vast assortment of garlic varieties!
If you plant bulbils, be prepared to wait for two full years before harvesting fully-grown garlic, but the results should be better than clove-planted garlic, and growing from bulbils makes it possible for us to offer a diverse collection of varieties. Read our article to learn more: How to Grow Garlic From Bulbils
While supplies last, we will send you a good amount (at least 10) of bulbils for 5 different varieties for $15 including shipping and handling. Please order at seeds.ca/store.
We cannot guarantee specific varieties, but if you have a favourite, please ask and we'll do our best to provide what you want.
Our Canadian Seed Catalog Index lists all the current information we have about the garlic suppliers in Canada. Check the Index or search our Seed Finder for local garlic suppliers in your area. Please let us know if you find any sources we've missed.

Happy Fall! What better time to reflect on the incredible work of youth leaders taking action this season in Waterloo Region and beyond. So, come with us as we look back on this year's Youth Food Market project, the many people that brought it to life, and more from the program this summer.
Read our 2026 YFS Summer Recap

A big thank you and farewell to our incredible summer staff! Throughout the season, Sage, Luma, Austin, Kiya, and Brennan supported youth working on school gardens and youth food markets, coordinated community connections, and helped bring our youth programs to life.
One of the most important things we do in our Seed Library collection are germination tests. When seeds age, they lose their ability to germinate (it's called seed viability) and we can't let that happen.
The problem is, there's no way to tell a seed's viability just by looking at it, weighing it, or even by its age. We have to plant a few, and see what happens.
From our Youth in Food Systems blog, we feature the creativity of young gardeners and writers who are learning how to create tomorrow's sustainable food system.
