Many of you will remember Judy Newman, our Office Manager who kept everything running smoothly for over two decades and who officially retired in 2019. Since then, she's still been involved behind the scenes, helping with records, advising new office staff, and mainly as the driving force behind our Canadian Seed Catalog Index and Seed Finder. It's finally time for us to carry on without her vast experience, and we wish her every happiness in her actual retirement!
Thanks so much Judy, for 26 years of helping grow Seeds of Diversity from its early years!
The Youth Seed Stewardship pilot started in October of last year with a set of learning workshops designed to provide participants with foundational knowledge in seed stewardship. From these workshops about half a dozen youth joined the project from November through to April, participating in monthly sessions, where they explored such things as:
~ What seeds should be in the newly created inter-school seed library?
~ How might we go about starting to establish a community-focused seed distribution model?
~ What information should be available to recipients of seeds about each variety?
~ How can we encourage and motivate schools to share seeds back with the Library?
This month, we continue our series about Seed Libraries in Canada with three more fantastic examples of individuals spearheading efforts to diversify the seeds available in their local communities. Each of the seed libraries in this article are situated in non-urban centers in Ontario (a.k.a communities with less than 150,000 people): Field, Keswick, and Orangeville.
Canada is often known for its maple syrup. It goes great with pancakes, coffee, or even as a drizzle for some delicious ice cream! But how is maple syrup made? This is precisely what we’re going to take a look at today.
